A mountain, carried into a landscape of lakes.
The work responds to the jade mountain in the collection of the Minneapolis Institute of Art. Its presence in Minnesota becomes a point of departure for thinking about migration, displacement, and the ways personal narratives meet larger histories.
Peng Wu and I made a mountain out of clay, carried it onto the frozen lake of Bdé Umáŋ, also known as Lake Harriet, and sat down with it across a table. The ceramic and video installation brings that encounter into conversation with the histories carried by objects and people.
